Preah Ko Temple Guide
Preah Ko: A Glimpse into the Dawn of Angkor Guide
Welcome to Preah Ko, one of the earliest temple complexes built in the ancient city of Hariharalaya (present-day Roluos), just outside Siem Reap. This 9th-century temple offers a fascinating glimpse into the origins of Khmer architecture and the foundations of the mighty Angkor Empire. While located in Stung Treng, it's a popular day trip destination from Siem Reap. Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore this serene and historically significant site. Preah Ko, meaning "Sacred Bull," was commissioned by King Indravarman I in 879 AD to honor his ancestors, particularly his father, Rudravarman. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and features six brick towers arranged in two rows of three, each housing a lingam representing a deified ancestor. The central towers are dedicated to Indravarman I's parents, while the outer towers honor his maternal grandfather and his predecessor, Jayavarman II. The intricate carvings on the brick towers, though weathered by time, offer a glimpse into the artistic prowess of the early Khmer civilization. Visitors to Preah Ko can wander through the temple grounds, admiring the architectural details and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Take your time to examine the intricate carvings on the brick towers, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and daily life. Photography enthusiasts will find ample opportunities to capture the beauty of the temple against the backdrop of the Cambodian landscape. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Preah Ko, you can find delicious Khmer cuisine in nearby Roluos or Siem Reap, including dishes like Amok (fish curry), Lok Lak (stir-fried beef), and Kuy Teav (noodle soup).
